Welcome to my Projects page.

Many of my projects centre on the natural environment, in particular landscapes and seascapes. As such, they concentrate on particular areas.

But there are also ongoing and overarching projects which are concerned with my exploration of different techniques, both in camera and in processing, and my experimentation with presentation.

Photography on Location

Outer Hebrides

In 2023 I undertook a drive from the Butt of Lewis, through Harris and, courtesy of the ferry, through North and South Uist to the small island of Eriskay. This was a wonderful photographic journey, with ever-changing weather and scenery. Deserted white sand beaches are a constant feature as is the clarity of light for which the Outer Hebrides is renowned.

The clarity of light is also evident in the beautiful Isle of Skye with its rugged mountain ranges and endless vistas.

Cornwall

I am a regular visitor to Cornwall and will never tire of trying to capture its magic. These photos represent a journey from Porthleven round Land's End to Hartland Point, just across the border with North Devon.

North Wales The mountains of Snowdonia and the stunning beaches, from Barmouth along the southern edge of the Lynn Peninsula and into Anglesey, provide infinite variety for the photographer and keep me returning.

In my locality; Woodstock and around

For day-to-day photography my 'go to' place is nearby Blenheim Park which I am lucky to have on my doorstep. It provides a wonderful variety of land and waterscapes and birdlife. And, of course, there is always my garden.

Photographic Techniques

Macro Photography

Macro or close-up photograph is particularly useful for detail shots and for enabling a narrow focus with the rest of the shot blurred.

Long Exposure

Using a long exposure is necessary for most night shots. It is also effective in smoothing water, for instance waves and waterfalls, to provide a soft milky effect. And in blurring a shot, in which there is movement to create a 'ghostly' effect.

Intentional Camera Movement (ICM)

Moving the camera in different ways, when taking a photo, can give a number of effects as the photos below illustrate

Post Camera Manipulation

Some really interesting effects can be achieved during post camera processing.

Presentation

I enjoy experimenting with ways of presenting my photos, for instance, using collages and colour charts.
